Explore Oman’s desert heritage at Al Hashman sand dunes

Explore nature’s true wonders at Al Hashman, Dhofar. The drive beyond the Lost City of Ubar takes the adventurous visitor further into the Empty Quarter desert of Oman and on to the Al Hashman sand dunes. The first stretch of the journey traverses a giant empty plain where the land is flat and parched with scant signs of life save for the occasional tree and shrub that somehow manages to cling to life. It is incredible to think of the resilient Bedouin making their trek across ancient trading routes and the faithful on their three-month journey by camel train to Mecca, routes long since replaced by planes and off-road vehicles. Head to the top of a sand dune to grasp the enormity of what is surely one of the natural wonders of the world.

Experience wonders of Oman’s marine treasure at Ras Hanani

Want to try snorkelling or diving? Ras Hanani is the place for you. Also known as Eagle Bay, Ras Hanani and the surrounding coastline is one of the best locations for snorkelling and diving in Dhofar and is also close to Salalah. This rocky inlet is seven kilometres southeast of Mirbat; the road becomes a bumpy track, ending at a soft, sandy beach only suitable for four-wheel drive vehicles. Lucky visitors catch glimpses of immense shoals of fish swirling just under the surface while colourful fish dart to and fro over the coral below and the occasional flat fish burrows in the sand beneath. Watch out for manta rays flapping by and monster-like moray eels hidden in the crevices between the rocks and coral. Ras Hanani is a great spot for camping and the sunsets are stunning, you will be left wondering why the crabs have left this idyllic spot, with only pyramid-like sand mounds evidence that there was ever any other being there. There are no facilities as Ras Hanani so bring everything you need with you including plenty of water and an umbrella for shade if you intend to stay a while. Campers will be delighted to know that for those who do not want to cook, there is a restaurant in Mirbat which will deliver your food and soft drinks order to your tent.

Try your hand at fishing adventure in Oman’s Dhofar

The waters off Dhofar is reputed to be one of the best places in the world to fish and it is not unusual to land many different species, such as Omani Bream, spangled emperors, Queen Fish, Blue Fish and snapper. A half or full day’s fishing trip from many locations in Oman is just what you need if you want to try your hand fishing. However, if you are willing to fly to Salalah and drive four hours north to Shuwaymiyah, your reward will be access to the fishing grounds around the Hallaniyah Islands the location of one of the last untouched fisheries in the world and home to the world’s only non-migratory humpback whales. There will be pods of dolphins, manta rays and turtles to view too. Perhaps the most exciting fishing is for Game Fish including the 60kg plus Giant Trevally, billfish, tuna and razor fish. Prime fishing months are mid-September through to the end of April. Keep in mind protecting the environment is of paramount importance to the Omani people to safeguard the fragile ecology of the region. To preserve fish stocks, visitors are urged to leave no trace of their visit save for footprints; take pictures and kill nothing but time.

This Oman’s untouched island is a historian’s dreamscape

A paradise for the history buffs, the Telegraph Island, officially Maqlab Island is nested in the fjords of Musandam. Due to tidal variations, it is not always possible to land here. However, swimmers can reach the shore or swim around the island as the weather permits. It is a pleasant place for snorkelling. Be careful of sharp rocks. Historical Significance With technological progress continuing apace in the mid 19th century, a telegraphic land line had been laid between Baghdad and Scutari (Albania). The next stage was to extend the line to India with a land line to Basra and an underwater cable through the Gulf. After considerable negotiations, Maqlab Island was chosen as the telegraph terminal on the Musandam Peninsula, and a telegraph station was built there in 1854 and maintained until 1869. It was a desolate, remote place and visitors to Telegraph Island will get a sense of why no one wanted to live there.
