Severe flooding in Jakarta that left swaths of the Indonesian capital underwater has crippled travel and transport in the city. Torrential rains have been pounding the greater Jakarta region since New Year’s Eve and are predicted to continue through to January 10. Airlines are being forced to axe or reroute flights as the worst flooding in seven years cut road access in Indonesia’s capital city. After being closed for a day, the Halim Perdanakusuma airport in Jakarta has been reopened for limited operations. As many as 45 flights from the Lion Air group were diverted and rerouted, while 29 flights were cancelled on January 1 while commuter trains also suspending some operations.
