After Air India announced offering its inventory solely through its select GDS, Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) along with Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) has urged the airline to review its decision. In a joint statement, the two associations said, “For these agencies including those which do not have access or frequently sell the airline seats on the GDS preferred by Air India, it is quite evident that selling Air India would not be an easy proposition and thus thay may opt for other airlines for their customers. For several established agencies, usage of GDS is governed by global agreements they have entered into and thus switching over or training their staff to get used to this limited GDS access will be a difficult option to cope with.’ On November 5, both the associations had a detailed discussion with the Air India Senior Management and conveyed that this decision of going exclusive on a GDS would be detrimental to the airline and this must be urgently reviewed. The associations are keen that Air India must not suffer any losses that would further damage the health of the airline. The senior management promised to revert in a day and on November 6, the associations received a phone call from them to inform that there will be no change in Air India’s stand. Visitor exports are a key component of the direct contribution of travel and tourism. In 2017, India generated Rs 1,777.1 billion in visitor exports. In 2018, this is expected to grow by 8.8 per cent, and the country is expected to attract 18,655,000 international tourist arrivals. By 2028, international tourist arrivals are forecast to total 30,469,000, generating expenditure of Rs 3,316.4 billion, an increase of 5.5 per cent per annum.

Aircraft movement has grown at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 5.37 per cent from 1.31 million in FY07 to 2.32 million during FY18, according to a report by India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF). During FY07-18, domestic aircraft movement increased at a CAGR of 7.38 per cent, while international aircraft movement expanded at 6.64 per cent CAGR over the same period. Apart from it, India’s domestic and international aircraft movements grew 14.40 per cent YOY and 9.40 per cent YOY to 1,886.63 thousand and 437.93 thousand during 2017 and 2018, respectively.

The India pavilion at World Travel Market 2018 in London was packed with activities for the trade and consumers alike. Addressing a press conference, Rashmi Verma, Secretary-Tourism, Government of India, enlisted the achievements of the Ministry. AbhiBus has bagged the online bus ticket reservation system project from the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). The online system provides an option for users to reserve bus tickets on the official website of KSRTC. Doing it online gives users an opportunity to access booking and reserve their bus tickets 30 days in advance. AbhiBus will also deploy a user-friendly mobile app for KSRTC that can be used for reserving ticketing through their mobile phones. Kerala becomes the fifth state road transport corporation in the country that AbhiBus would be engaged with after Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh. Read More »India witnesses 7.9% growth in FTAs from January to June 2018 YOY
India has witnessed a total of 51,63,343 Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in 2018, a growth of 7.9% compared to 2017, reveals a latest report ‘India Tourism Statistics at a glance 2018’ by the Ministry of Tourism (MoT). Last year, from January to June, the country saw 47,84,847 FTAs. However, in 2016, there were 41,68,864 FTAs during the same months. When compared, an increase of 14.8% was found in FTAs from 2016 to 2017. The report also mentions that in FY2016-17, the months of April and June saw 21.3% increase in the number of FTAs – the maximum in the year. In April 2016, there were 5,92,004 FTAs in the country, whereas 7,17,899 in 2017. The report also highlights that in the current year, March 2018 records the highest percentage (18%), with 10,25,830 FTAs in India.

Train travel remains the preferred means for long-distance travel for majority of Indians. Increase in the demand for passenger trains is supported by urbanisation, improving income standards. According to a recent report by India Brand Equity Foundation, passenger traffic in the country increased to 8.29 billion during FY18 and is further expected to advance to 15.20 billion by FY20. Besides, passenger traffic during April-May 2018 stood at 1,380.63 million. In May 2018, IRCTC introduced Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme (ATAS) which aims at providing confirmed berths in alternate trains to waitlisted passengers. The scheme is expected to improve passenger experience.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has registered growth of more than 15% and 22% in its revenues and profits after tax, respectively in the financial year 2016-17 as compared to the financial year 2015-16. While its traditional businesses have grown at a healthy rate, growth in the new businesses and new markets also contributed to its revenues, according to AAI annual report 2016-17. The major factors for hike in revenue are increase in route navigational charges and terminal landing charges; increase in landing, housing and parking charges; increase in passenger service fee; increase in other revenue like trading concession, rent and services, cargo, UDF and other miscellaneous revenue, and increase in share of revenue from Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) & Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (MIAL).
