Indonesia plans extension of ‘VoA to Bali’ program for Indian nationals to boost foreign tourist arrivals

Indonesia has extended its ‘Visa on Arrival to Bali’ program on March that was launched on March 7 for holidaymakers flying in from 23 countries, including India in a bid to spur foreign tourist arrivals. It also revoked the obligation to have a sponsor for a tourist e-visa request. Indonesia’s Tourism & Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said, “The tourism ministry proposed to add several countries to the VoA list, including India, and it has been approved.”

Government accords ‘in-principle’ approval for setting up of 21 Greenfield airports across India

The Government of India has accorded ‘in-principle’ approval for setting up of 21 Greenfield Airports across the country. So far, eight Greenfield airports namely, Sindhudurg and Shirdi in Maharashtra, Durgapur in West Bengal, Pakyong in Sikkim, Kannur in Kerala, Orvakal in Andhra Pradesh, Kalaburagi in Karnataka and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh have been operationalised. Under RCS-UDAN, 405 routes connecting 65 airports including 8 heliports and 2 water aerodromes have been operationalised as on 8 March, 2022.

Taj Mahal ranks second in a study revealing the best value for money tourist attractions

A study by ParkSleepFly analysed the cost of an adult’s single-day admission ticket to 30 of the world’s top tourist attractions, as well as the number of ‘poor’ and ‘terrible’ reviews received by each attraction. The attractions were then given a normalised ‘value score’ out of ten to reveal the world’s best value for money tourist attractions. Ranking in second place is The Taj Mahal. Known for being one of the most beautiful examples of architecture in the world, the landmark is also relatively affordable, with an entry ticket costing $14.61(£10.81/€12.89). Just 1% of visitors to the Taj Mahal leave a bad review, representing the excellent value.

Ethiopian Airlines to resume regular commercial passenger operations from Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru

Ethiopian Airlines has announced that effective March 27, 2022 it will resume its regular  passenger services daily from Mumbai and Delhi. It is nearly two years since the resumption of normal services, prior to which it had to rely on the air bubble agreement of once a week flights from December 04, 2020 and before that ADHOC special repatriation flights. Bengaluru will also be reconnected after two years effective March 29, 2022, with thrice weekly flights.  With three Indian cities back on the radar, Ethiopian Airlines will continue to play a significant role in bringing India and Africa together in general and India and Ethiopia in particular.

Ministry of Tourism formulates National Strategy and Roadmap for Medical and Wellness Tourism

In order to create a robust framework and synergy amongst the Central Government Ministries, State Governments, and Private Sector for promoting India as a Medical and Wellness Tourism destination, the Ministry of Tourism has formulated a National Strategy and Roadmap for Medical and Wellness Tourism. To provide a dedicated institutional framework to take forward the cause of promotion of Medical Tourism, the Ministry of Tourism has constituted a National Medical and Wellness Tourism Board with the Minister of Tourism as its Chairman. As part of its ongoing activities, the Ministry of Tourism, releases global print, electronic and online media campaigns in important and potential markets overseas, under the ‘Incredible India’ brand line, to promote various tourism destinations and products of the country. Digital promotions are also regularly undertaken through the Social Media accounts of the Ministry on different themes including the theme of Medical Tourism.

UK announces removal of all COVID-19 international travel restrictions for passengers from 18th March  

The government will remove the remaining restrictions on international travel for all passengers ahead of the Easter holidays, the Transport Secretary announced. From 4 am Friday 18 March, all COVID-19 travel restrictions will be lifted, including the passenger locator form (PLF) for arrivals into the UK, as well as all tests for passengers who do not qualify as vaccinated. This change, therefore, removes the need for unvaccinated passengers to take a pre-departure test and a day 2 post-arrival test.

New Goa airport under completion, anticipated to open later this year

At Goa, a new airport should open later this year, one of few during the period of the coronavirus pandemic. As it will be heavily tourist-oriented there will be great interest around the world in how it performs during the winter 2022-23 period – the acid test for the industry’s ‘recovery’ ahead of schedule.  The airport is scheduled to begin operation in Aug-2022, said Center for Civil Aviation in a recent report.

76 projects under Swadesh Darshan, including Buddhist theme being developed by MOT

The development of Tourism is primarily the responsibility of the State Governments/Union Territory Administrations. However, the Ministry of Tourism under its Swadesh Darshan scheme since its inception has sanctioned 76 projects under 13thematic circuits including ‘Buddhist theme’ for the development of tourism infrastructure in the country. The projects under the scheme were identified for development in consultation with the State Governments/Union Territory Administrations and sanctioned subject to availability of funds, submission of suitable detailed project reports, adherence to scheme guidelines and utilization of funds released earlier, etc.
