Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has funded a training course and manual to help both Thai and ASEAN travel and tourism executives understand the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The course, conceptualised and compiled by Imtiaz Muqbil, Executive Editor, Travel Impact Newswire, will facilitate brainstorming of ideas to enhance the visibility of the SDGs. India Tourism, Singapore, is organising a series of webinars cum B2B sessions titled ‘India Tourism Reconnect’ in the ASEAN region on March 11, 16 & 18, in line with the global vaccination drive. The aim is to reconnect the Indian tourism industry with stakeholders in key markets and start preparing for resumption of business as and when it is announced. The virtual meets will start on 11th March with a focus on Philippines followed by Malaysia (16th March) and Singapore (18th March). Union Minister K J Alphons has said the country’s tourism sector fetched USD 234 billion revenue last year, registering a growth of over 19 per cent. Delivering the inaugural speech at the 2nd ASEAN-India Youth Summit here, he said the country was ranked third in the tourism sector, according to the 2018 report of World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC). “Last year, India generated USD 234 billion revenue from the tourism sector. While the global revenue growth was 5 per cent, it grew by 19.4 per cent in India,” the Union tourism minister said. This revenue was contributed by 87 per cent domestic and 13 per cent foreign tourists, Alphons said. “From the foreign tourists, we earned USD 27 billion, which grew by 14 per cent compared to global growth of 7 per cent,” he said, adding that around 82 million people are employed in the tourism sector. About spiritual tourism, Alphons said 60-70 per cent of the total domestic tourists fall under this category. “The Indian philosophy is yoga. We see all as one. Yoga is the way of life and it says the entire universe is part of me. If I want to be happy, others have to be happy — this is the philosophy behind yoga. Let us forget physical connectivity, this is the spiritual connectivity between us,” the minister said. Beginning December 2018, Jet Airways will introduce 18 additional flights on select destinations such as Bangkok, Kathmandu and Singapore in ASEAN as well as Doha and Dubai in the Gulf. Further, it will soon add a third daily frequency to Bangkok and Singapore each from Delhi and a third daily service to Singapore from Mumbai. Additional frequencies will also be introduced to the Gulf, strengthening the airline’s status as one of the largest carriers to/ from the region. December will see the introduction of second daily services connecting Mumbai and Delhi with Doha respectively. The addition of a seventh daily frequency between Mumbai and Dubai will also make Jet Airways the only airline to offer unparalleled 24-hour connectivity to the Gulf’s favourite destination with maximum number of daily services. Apart from it, the carrier will offer a fourth daily frequency between Delhi and Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. With effect from March 21, 2016, Jet Airways will launch a new daily flight between Delhi and Muscat, Oman, at fares starting Rs 15, 782. The addition of this new flight from the airline’s strategic hub in Delhi will further strengthen the airline’s growing international network and enhance flight connectivity from Northern India, SAARC and ASEAN and to the Gulf region. India and Oman are linked by historical maritime trade linkages and the important role of the Indian expatriate community in the development of Oman.
