South India Hotels & Restaurants Association (SIHRA) organised a vaccination camp for hoteliers, which was inaugurated at GRT Convention Centre, Chennai by Shri Venkatesan, Regional Director (South), Indiatourism. The camp received good response from all Chennai hoteliers. In a tweet, Ministry of Tourism gave special thanks to Chennai Corporation Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and all the Health Department officials for their support.

Indiatourism Mumbai along with IHM Mumbai conducted a session on ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ for the institute’s students and faculty. The online session, attended by 120 students, was a commemoration of the Revolt of 1857 and the lesser-known freedom fighters of India. It was guided by Venkatesan Dhattareyan, Regional Director, West & Central, Indiatourism and Malti Dutta, Assistant Director, West & Central, Indiatourism. This was the first of many sessions that will be conducted following the programme charted out for ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

The four-day Tourism EXPO Japan (TEJ) 2018 is underway at Tokyo Big Sight on the theme ‘New Forms of Tourism and Travel’. The India pavilion at the exhibition was inaugurated by Padmini Brahma, Assistant Director—East Asia Region, Indiatourism; Satya Pal Kumar, First Secretary (Trade), Embassy of India, Tokyo; Raj Kumar Srivastava, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India, Tokyo; Apurva Varma, Additional Chief Secretary to Government—Tourism, Culture & Religious Endowments Department, Tamil Nadu; and V Palanikumar, Commissioner of Tourism and Chairman & Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation. The TEJ Ministerial Roundtable has attracted the participation of tourism ministers from 14 countries and representatives of tourism-related international organisations, the Japan Tourism Agency and the governor of Tokyo. In the exhibition business meetings, business talks with some 1,300 buyers and sellers will be held at exhibition booths with 200,000 visitors expected. Anita Mendiratta, Moderator at the TEJ Ministerial Roundtable, said, “Through tourism and travel, people worldwide are opening their minds and hearts to understand, respect and celebrate differences across countries, cultures and communities.”

Every year, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, observes ‘Swachhta Pakhwada’ from September 16-30 by organising various cleanliness programmes at the premises of its offices, educational institutions, prominent tourist places, etc. This year, ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ (Cleanliness is service), to be held from September 15, 2018 to October 2, 2018, coincides with the ‘Swachhta Pakhwada’. Indiatourism Mumbai invited Indore Municipal Corporation to interact with Mumbai and neighbouring municipal corporation representatives, travel and tourism fraternity and students to show how the Indore Municipal Corporation has achieved this feat by undertaking cleanliness drive. Indore has worked on retaining its “Cleanest City in India” title for the Swachh Sarvekshan Survey best city award for two consecutive years. The survey aims to encourage large-scale citizen participation and create awareness amongst all sections of society about the importance of working together towards making towns and cities a better place to live in. Dr Uttam Yadav, Health Officer, Indore Municipal Corporation, gave a detailed presentation on the initiative and scientific approach taken in mission mode for bringing Indore the status of cleanest city in India. He focussed on the minute detailing like changing the behaviour of citizens, changing mind set and using services of rag-pickers for loss of work due to cleanliness drive. Further, he highlighted the after effect of the cleanliness drive, which saw decline in the number of cases of health-related issues. Indiatourism Mumbai will be organising cleanliness drive at important tourist sites during the period, including clean-up activities, pledge swearing, awareness activities, essay competition, nukkad natak, etc.

His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, inaugurated Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2018, marking the start of the 25th edition of the show. This year’s show, which is taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre from April 22-25, 2018, has more than 400 stand holders. India’s presence at the show includes state tourism boards, hotels, tour operators and technology providers. Showcasing India’s diverse tourism offerings and the growing inbound numbers from the UAE, Navdeep Suri, Ambassador of India to the UAE, highlighted that there are currently 1065 flights a week between both nations connecting 17 Indian cities to the UAE. Suri was accompanied by Manas Pattanaik, Deputy Director General, Ministry of Tourism and Braja Mukherjee, Assistant Director (in-charge), Indiatourism, Dubai, while promoting the country at the show. ATM 2018 has adopted Responsible Tourism – including sustainable travel trends – as its main theme and this will be integrated across all show activities.
