In a significant development, the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India has initiated legal action to seek appropriate remedies for hotel members affected by adverse provisions from the Delhi HC for the hospitality sector from the DGFT. “The hospitality sector must receive fair treatment under the Foreign Trade Policy,” said Pradeep Shetty, President, FHRAI.

Pradeep Shetty, President, HRAWI has said that their upcoming convention is poised to achieve big goals in tourism, “Our convention in Goa aims to drive growth in a sustainable manner, aligning with India’s vision of achieving 100 mn tourists by 2047 and a $3 tn hospitality tourism economy.” he added.

The 54th Annual Convention of FHRAI will be held in Goa from 16-18 October, 2024. Pradeep Shetty, President, FHRAI, announced the same at Travel For Life Tourism Sustainability Summit, held in Delhi. “FHRAI is committed and focused to make sustainable tourism its new agenda for growth,” he said.

HRAWI recommends reform in GST framework for restaurants within hotel premises. “The sudden jump in GST from 5 per cent to 18 per cent when room rates exceed ₹7500/-, creates uncertainty for guests and places hotels at a disadvantage. We have submitted a representation to the Government,” said Pradeep Shetty, President, HRAWI.

At the 67th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of FHRAI, Pradeep Shetty has been elected as the President of FHRAI for 2023-2024. He will be assuming charge from 1st January 2024. 23 new EC members were also elected at the 67th AGM.

Concerned over rising incidences of online hotel rooms booking frauds and instances of targeted smear campaigns on social media against hospitality brands, HRAWI will take up the issue with the concerned Government authorities and law enforcement agencies.

Referring to the Export Promotion Capital Goods (EPCG) Scheme, Pradeep Shetty, Jt. Hon. Sec, FHRAI, says, “The single-most important factor in attracting more international tourists is for India to be in tune with global standards if we want to compete with South East Asia and Sri Lanka. This is in terms of technology, décor, property, maintenance systems, etc. Many things are not manufactured in India. Therefore, the EPCG scheme is of primary importance. But it is understood that the government is looking to scrap this scheme altogether for the hospitality industry. We understand that we are moving towards Atma Nirbhar and Make in India but we cannot do that for hospitality till a time when our manufacturing industry gives us singular products in terms of quality, pricing and technology.” 

Pradeep Shetty, FHRAI’s Joint Honorary Secretary, has said that while they are happy the disastrous state of affairs of the sector and the plight of millions of workforce employed in the sector have been recognised by the government, the promotion of domestic tourism is the need of the hour. “Therefore, we request the government to incentivise domestic tourism as well,” he says.
