High taxes in the transport sector have hit Himachal Pradesh tourism hard. The state government levied a tax ranging from ₹500 to ₹1,400 per day on tourist vehicles entering the state. Protesting the higher taxes, the tour operators of Gujarat boycotted the state and diverted tourists to the adjoining states, which led to a 25% dip in tourism. 

The Ministry of Tourism (MOT) has advised State Government/Union Territory Administrations to set up Hospitality Development Boards if the same do not exist in their respective States/Union Territories. The Ministry of Tourism (MOT) has so far sanctioned 12 Institutes of Hospitality Management in the northeastern states. Out of these Central Institute of Hotel Management, Guwahati, Central Institute of Hotel Management, Shillong, State Institute of Hotel Management, Gangtok and Food Craft Institute, Nawgaon are operational. This information was given by Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State (I/C) for Culture and Tourism in a written reply in Lok Sabha. The State Government of Maharashtra has reportedly setup Hospitality Development and Promotion Board.
